The Indianapolis Five Hundred Mile Race, or simply Indy 500, is an annual open wheel race held almost annually since before the First World War. It is one of the United States' national motorsports events alongside the Daytona 500 and the Twelve Hours of Sebring. It is held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. In the early years of Formula One, the event acted as the de facto United States Grand Prix. The Indy 500 formed the first round of the USAC era of the IndyCar Series.
